THE SHIBA INU IS A DELIGHT TO BE AROUND

This breed is an interesting little dog.  Its origins date back to Japan. In Japanese, Inu is the Japanese word for dog.  Shiba in Japan is a type of shrub. The ones I have treated have all been down in Florida. I never saw one up in my Ohio practice. The breed is a relatively small dog but has a strong independent like streak to it. This tendency makes them very difficult to train. The fun thing about this breed is the typical tail that is curled up over its body. They are a rugged dog that does well in city or suburban living.

SMART AND VERY HEALTHY

The breed is a smart dog and very well aware of its surroundings. This trait makes them excellent little guard dogs. The Shiba Inu needs to be socialized early as they are loyal just to their family and leery of strangers; and that means veterinarians!  Shiba Inu dogs are healthy animals but can develop certain eye problems. They possess a thick coat. It is not only thick but dense so they do not get that dirty over time. An occasional bath and bi-weekly combings and brushing are all that is required. This breed is a trusting, loyal companion dog. You will not be bored with a Shiba Inu!  Learn more about the Shiba Inu at Animal Planet’s Dog Breed Selector.
